Run on a Husky bus

A Husky bus carries the payload on the balloon. It gives the payload power, a network, an Internet connection, and a place to send logs and metrics. This page tells you what the bus supplies and how your payload uses it.

What the bus supplies

ItemDetails
Payload LANAn Ethernet port for the payload. The bus runs a DHCP server on it.
InternetThe bus routes payload traffic out through its own link (NAT). Your payload can reach Mission Control (MC) over HTTPS.
PowerA switched payload rail, 5–12 V. Operators turn it on and set the voltage. After a reboot, the bus puts the rail back to its saved state.
Logs/metricsAn ingest service on the bus at port 4318. See Send logs and metrics.
Command routeMC reaches your command server through the bus link, at your payload-LAN address.

Get an address from DHCP. On a Husky bus the payload LAN is 192.168.8.0/24 and the bus is 192.168.8.1. On a cloud bench bus it is 10.55.0.0/24 and the bus is 10.55.0.1. The examples use BUS_ADDRESS for the bus.

Register the payload

Follow the integration steps.

Device API (recommended). Serve the device API on port 8090. The bus finds your payload by its DHCP lease, announces it to MC as <bus>-<key>, and forwards commands for modules the bus allows (PAYLOAD_LAN_MODULES). Your payload needs no token and no route to the Internet.

Self-announce. Your payload announces itself and sends telemetry to MC through the bus's Internet connection. For commands, announce your payload-LAN address with networkMode: NETWORK_MODE_SHARED_VPN and the bus's serial as identity.parentSerial. MC then sends commands through the bus link. See Connect, step 1.

Re-announce when DHCP gives your payload a new address.

Send logs and metrics

Send logs and metrics to the bus at port 4318 on its payload-LAN address. The bus labels them with your payload and forwards them to Urban Sky's monitoring. You do not need a key or a certificate. Routes, the SDK client, rules and limits: Send logs and metrics.

Limits

See Send logs and metrics: Limits.
